Shurooms: The First Ethnomycological Study from Within the African Initiatory Tradition
Shurooms is a landmark ethnomycological study of sacred psilocybin ceremony authored from inside the African initiatory tradition. Based on participant-observation across 300+ guided ceremonies in Detroit, the paper is published with a permanent DOI on Zenodo (CERN) and accompanied by a full-length book on Google Play Books. It is the first major work in psychedelic scholarship written by a tri-lineage initiated priest rather than an outside observer.

Western psychedelic scholarship has long been shaped by observers who documented sacred mushroom use without initiation into the tradition they studied.
- R. Gordon Wasson observed Mazatec mushroom ceremonies in 1955 but was never initiated into the tradition.
- Richard Evans Schultes spent decades cataloging indigenous plant use across the Amazon but did not practice within a lineage.
- Roland Griffiths measured psilocybin's effects at Johns Hopkins entirely outside any traditional ceremonial context.

What the study documents
The paper documents participant-observation across more than 5 profiles of participants at an urban ashram in Detroit, Michigan. Ceremonial doses ranged from 5 to 10 grams and were structured by the Ten Principles of Ceremony; ngoma sonic navigation from the Southern African healing drum tradition; ubuntu relational philosophy.

Policy
From ceremony to city law
Shumake is also the author of Detroit's Proposal E, the 2021 ballot measure that decriminalized entheogenic plants in the city of Detroit. The measure passed with 61.08 percent of the vote, making Detroit one of the first major American cities to decriminalize natural psychedelics including psilocybin mushrooms, ayahuasca, mescaline-containing cacti and ibogaine. Shurooms provides the scholarly and ceremonial foundation that underpinned that legislative achievement.

Robert S. Shumake PhD — also known as Ajarn Shaman Shu, Oluwo Jolaoso Osainbola PhD, and Shri Suryanarayana Swamikal — is the author of more than 140 published books and 86+ DOI-registered academic publications indexed on Zenodo (CERN), the Open Science Framework, and ORCID.
He is the founder and chancellor of seven religious universities operating under Buddha Digital Temple, a 508(c)(1)(a) religious educational institution: Buddha University, Orisha University, Shiva University, Krishna University, Islam University, Enoch University, and Egziabher University.
He is the publisher of 263 newspaper domains through Shumake Media Group. He acquired and republished Smart Money Magazine (originally founded by the Wall Street Journal/Dow Jones) and Business 2.0 (originally founded by Time Magazine/Time Inc.), and launched Smart Money Black for African American entrepreneurs in partnership with the National Business League.
He holds an honorary doctorate from Lewis College of Business in Detroit and completed the Harvard Data Science Initiative Agentic AI Intensive in June 2026 (Certificate of Completion, Verification: UTHW-KVJS), applying artificial intelligence to spiritual education, automated publishing, and economic development for underserved communities.
